Ben's Birthday, Spring Break

This week was Ben's birthday and Spring Break. Ben's Birthday was literally the only day we had something planned. The rest of the week was wide open so I made sure to make lots of playdates with friends and that helped make the week more tolerable. The kids do better and whine less about being bored if they are with friends.

On Tuesday Lucy and Penny had Angelica and Luna over and I decided to walk them all to 7-11 and then we hit up Scarlet's Park afterwards. It was a lot of walking and pretty much wiped me out for the rest of the day but it was also really nice to be outside enjoying the sunshine. Penny even turned a little pink, her skin hasn't seen that much sunlight in awhile. I made a mistake and forgot my phone at home though and their mom came to pick them up and we weren't there, oops! I felt bad but she didn't seem too bothered.

Wednesday Ben had his 13th birthday party! It was a busy day. He woke up and opened presents per usual. He got a Nerf gun, several Star Wars Lego sets and a book on how to draw mythological creatures.

I had to tidy up and set up the house for his Murder Mystery party and go buy a few last minute things for it. I probably spent more money than I should have on it but it was a really fun theme and the script I bought off Etsy made it easy to carry out. Penny helped me set up the murder scene and the Pizzeria.

His friends are awesome and all put some good effort into dressing like the character they would be playing. When they arrived we took their criminal photos for fun. Ben was the Mayor and Lucy wanted to be the Detective so she could arrest the murderer at the end.

Once everyone had got their pictures and grabbed some food, I had them pick a card to find out if they were guilty or not. Next we listened to some audio of the detective introducing the scene and after that everyone read their introductions of themselves. We then had 3 acts. Each act began with some more clues from the detective and then they would ask each other questions to figure out who was the murderer. The script had the questions to ask each person and then how they should answer the questions (depending on if they were guilty or not). They weren't always the best at reading their parts and some struggled with finding what they were supposed to read but overall it went smoothly. However, only one person guessed the murderer correctly- Andrea- she was actually listening for clues, instead of just listening for motive. AJ who was playing a model named Pex ended up being the one who had done it. He was a good sport with the whole thing.

When the Murder Mystery was over, they played tag outside and then came back in for some cake and ice cream. They ended the party with opening gifts and some Nintendo Switch. Ben got a little too intense with Smash Brothers and was quite unkind to those who were not pros. Turning into a bit of a teen already I guess...

Most of the party goers left around 5pm but Ben had Andrea and Jacob stay and they played some more games and then watched "Venom". I would say it was a good 13th birthday for Ben.

Friday night we went as a family to see the new "Dungeons and Dragons" movie. It was a lot of fun and we really enjoyed it. Tyler was impressed that all the monsters in it were actually legit ones from D&D and he said it seemed to stay mostly true to things. I just thought it was fun to watch. It was also really nice just to get out as a family.

Saturday Steven, Tyler and Ben went to another Robotics Competition. Their robot ended up ranking 13th so I think that means they'll make it to the next competition. Meanwhile the girls and I went to an Easter Egg Hunt. It poured down rain which ended up being a good thing. They had the older kids go sooner so we didn't have to wait around for an hour. However, the girls were massively disappointed later when they realized there was no candy in the eggs. Lame.

The rest of our day was spent watching General Confernce. The girls did a good job being reverent and taking notes. Boys made it back for the second session. Steven decided taking notes wasn't worth the bribery (7-11 candy trips for each session) and just did Sudoku instead but Ben took notes as well.
